I was the manager of a pizza restaurant for over 3 years. I had this job while I was in college studying marketing. Naturally, I tried to bring what I learned in school into my job. Being the manager I was in charge of trying to get our name out there, bringing new customers in, offering new and exciting recipes, and, of course, trying to increase the bottom line. Now, the owner wasn't always too keen on my ideas. He liked things the old fashioned way, and was afraid to 1.) Offer new items and 2.) spend money on "advertising". Lucky for me, he owned 8 other locations (I think its 10 or 12 now) at the time and he wasn't around very often, which gave me free reign as far as the new menu ideas were concerned.

I'm not normally a very creative person, but when it comes to food I love to experiment with new things. As much as he tried to "keep the menu the same", I would always sneak in some "daily specials" on the days I knew he wouldn't be stopping by. I would try to offer them at lunch time when I noticed a lot of people were pretty experimental and quite willing to try something new. Don't you get sick of having the same thing for lunch everyday? Well I took advantage of this as much as I could. My only problem was that I didn't have a great way to advertise my concoctions.
Normally when I came up with something I thought was worthy of offering to the public, I would break out my little bag of children's markers that I kept under the register. I'd rip off and order slip, flip it over and do my best to create an "eye-catching" sign to entice the regulars to try something new. I hoped to get enough people to try something that I could have a good amount of sales to show the owner when I proposed to put it on the menu. My 'order slip advertising' really didn't cut it. That's about the end of the story. I left the pizza place to get a "real job", but I have always wished that I had found a solution to my in-store advertising dilemna.

I found this website recently, called food-display.us.com. If only this site had been around a few years ago, because they have the perfect oak restaurant chalkboard for my advertising needs. The chalkboard is jet black and looks great when written on with flourescent chalk markers (which, they also sell, by the way). The markerbaord is CHEAP (I think cheap enough that ol' owner Sam would have even said yes). The dimensions are 22"w x 30"h, which would have been just perfect to offer a few daily specials. Now I know, for next time, I suppose.

This bright illuminated marker board is really cool. It is 23" wide by 29" high and fits perfectly in my window. You might ask, do I own a nail salon, pub, or other place of business? Nah. I just like it. I hang it in my living room window (facing out, of course) and write something on it daily. Whatever strikes my fancy. Maybe i'll put an inspirational quote, maybe i'll write really tiny and ramble on for 1,000 words about how I can't stand the way my boyfriend tracks dirt through the house over and over and over again when i've asked him thousands of times to take his shoes off at the door. Maybe i'll write lyrics to my favorite song, or whatever. I've noticed the neighbors looking at this bright illuminated marker board and trying to read what it says, but they don't dare come up to the window and read it. I have your typical office job. I sit in a little cubicle, with high walls. A prisoner to my computer for 9 hours a day. I don't, however, have your typical boss. Nope. My boss forgets what she's assigned me to do, and the work load just piles up. I was forever having to remind her of what I was working on, when she'd come by my cubicle and sternly say "Hey, why weren't all of those changes made on the web yet? I asked you to do those this morning! It should only take 7 minutes. Seven minutes tops!" Her time estimates were never in "real people" time. Then one day it dawned on me. A combination cork board and markerboard! If she saw, written down, what was on my plate, maybe, just maybe she'd remember all the tasks that she kept piling on me.

I took the time to neatly write down all of the tasks she'd assigned to me on the markerboard.
