This information display keeps office quandaries to a minimum. Just the other day my office celebrated the birthdays of the month by bringing in a giant cake to share. Every month we have a different flavor and this month was carrot! Not my favorite, but certainly a nice digression from typical sugar-loaded sheet cakes. But thus, cake day is not the reason for my blog.

While we sang happy birthday I noticed a discreet message attached to our office information display, which I’m sure many people missed. It was from the new girl, Julie, who clearly was someone who needed to work on her interpersonal skills. She had recently brought in a tub of cream cheese to accommodate her daily breakfast bagel. Apparently someone had gone into the fridge and vandalized her precious bagel spread! She was furious, yet her retaliation was to place a memo on the company information board. It read “$$$ REWARD: A compensation of $25 will be granted to anyone with information regarding the bread crumbs left in my cream cheese, on Monday, September 21st.”

As I held in my snicker I realized Julie was using our information display board as a passive-aggressive way to retaliate. Or maybe she would confront the evil being who left crumbs in her cheese spread. Unsure of the seriousness of the warning, I pointed it out to my coworker Johnny, who nearly choked on his cake when he read it. Apparently he was the culprit! Well clearly he needed to do something to avoid the wrath of Julie!

After cake, I went back to my cubicle and pondered more about the information display and its intended purpose. Was it really meant for cream-cheese obsessed threats? Or is the corkboard for informational purposes, such as upcoming meetings and company policies? I mean the acrylic side pockets hold healthcare enrollment forms. No where does anything mention cream cheese or proper food-sharing practices within an office. Were we doing something wrong? Should we have step-by-step instructions on proper food-sharing techniques?

Regardless of the answers to those questions, Johnny arrived at work the next day with a new tub on cheese. He placed it into the fridge anonymously with the hopes that Julie would be satisfied. And she was. Later on in the day, there appeared a new note, this time with hearts surrounding her grateful words. Like I said, this information display helped us avoid another office quandary.
