Present-day podiums, also referred to as lecterns, are fabricated out of many materials that create a more contemporary look for the modern speaker. By definition, a podium is a desk with a slanted top on which documents or books are placed as support for reading aloud. Podiums are big in the academic and religious communities where there are often public speakers giving lectures and/or sermons.
