I was the manager of a pizza restaurant for over 3 years. I had this job while I was in college studying marketing. Naturally, I tried to bring what I learned in school into my job. Being the manager I was in charge of trying to get our name out there, bringing new customers in, offering new and exciting recipes, and, of course, trying to increase the bottom line. Now, the owner wasn't always too keen on my ideas. He liked things the old fashioned way, and was afraid to 1.) Offer new items and 2.) spend money on "advertising". Lucky for me, he owned 8 other locations (I think its 10 or 12 now) at the time and he wasn't around very often, which gave me free reign as far as the new menu ideas were concerned.

I'm not normally a very creative person, but when it comes to food I love to experiment with new things. As much as he tried to "keep the menu the same", I would always sneak in some "daily specials" on the days I knew he wouldn't be stopping by. I would try to offer them at lunch time when I noticed a lot of people were pretty experimental and quite willing to try something new. Don't you get sick of having the same thing for lunch everyday? Well I took advantage of this as much as I could. My only problem was that I didn't have a great way to advertise my concoctions.
Normally when I came up with something I thought was worthy of offering to the public, I would break out my little bag of children's markers that I kept under the register. I'd rip off and order slip, flip it over and do my best to create an "eye-catching" sign to entice the regulars to try something new. I hoped to get enough people to try something that I could have a good amount of sales to show the owner when I proposed to put it on the menu. My 'order slip advertising' really didn't cut it. That's about the end of the story. I left the pizza place to get a "real job", but I have always wished that I had found a solution to my in-store advertising dilemna.

I found this website recently, called food-display.us.com. If only this site had been around a few years ago, because they have the perfect oak restaurant chalkboard for my advertising needs. The chalkboard is jet black and looks great when written on with flourescent chalk markers (which, they also sell, by the way). The markerbaord is CHEAP (I think cheap enough that ol' owner Sam would have even said yes). The dimensions are 22"w x 30"h, which would have been just perfect to offer a few daily specials. I love sushi. Not the raw kind, only cooked sushi. For the longest time, though, my boyfriend was repulsed by most types of seafood, especially sushi. I knew he'd close his eyes for a kiss. As he leaned in, I opened his mouth with one hand and shoved the roll in his mouth. Much to my surprise, he didn't spit it out, which I was very thankful for. Instead, he chewed it and swallowed. Then, I asked, "Well, what did you think?!" To which his response was, "What was that? It was delicious!" Before I could even answer, he stared up at the wallmount chalkboard and ordered one of each of the sushi specials. I tried to warn him that one of the specials was raw eel, but he didn't listen. Sometimes I blog about products and how amazing they are and beneficial to my business they can be. But today, I am going to blog about family. In particular my cousin Nancy. Besides the fact that she is family, Nancy is a dear friend of mine. However, she is always running late for things and makes last-minute decisions. Her baby shower was no exception. I purchased this beautiful wedding frame to proudly display my wedding photo. I searched all those ritzy bridal shops first, but they are truly RIDICULOUSLY priced. No joke- $150 for a picture frame. Are you kidding me?!?! Tell me how much it cost to make that piece of garbage in China? $5, maybe $8 if they needed to turn the lights on in the factory that day? Sorry my friends, your store is beautiful but I WILL NOT line your pockets for a wedding picture frame. For my dress, or flowers, maybe... But a picture frame, no way jose.

So, after [clearly] having a mini-temper tantrum at Haute-Couture Bridal, and scouring the shelves at many more locations, I decided to take matters into my own hands. There had to be somewhere that sold a halfway decent frame at a sensible price. I hit up the average consumer's godsend: Google.com. I typed in "Decorative Picture Frame" (If i've learned anything from the internet it is to narrow your search after you've typed in a term. Never be too specific, it doesn't work). Well, it turns out I didn't even have to narrow my search. Apparently the product launchers and search engine optimization experts at photoframes.us.com are doing their homework and beating the system (and their competitors). I found this GORGEOUS frame for only around $50 for an 8" x 10" size (much less for smaller sizes, too).

I am so glad I didn't fall into the welcoming [greedy] arms of Ms. Haute Couture Bridal. Let her take advantage of some other suckers.

So I work in an office. And sometimes on a hot day, or just when the office gets toasty in the afternoon when the air turns off, you need a little pick-me-up to keep those eyelids open through the rest of the afternoon. In my department, we decided the solution to the mid-day slump was a candy dispenser for our department, and not just any candy dispenser. The candy dispenser we got was gravity fed, unlike other candy dispensers that are "portion-controlled". Who needs small portions of candy?! There is nothing like pulling that lever and having that yummy, delicious, sugary goodness coming flowing into your hand like an unstoppable monsoon. The only downside to the gravity fed candy dispenser was that we went through our supply of candy VERY quickly. I mean the thing holds 3 gallons of candy. THREE WHOLE GALLONS! You'd think it would last a while, but we went through that like nothing. With every trip to the water cooler, there was a stop for a handful of candy. We had to put a rotation schedule in place, so everyone had a turn filling the candy dispenser with their favorite type of candy. We tried to make it a rule that those people who didn't want to take a turn filling the dispenser couldn't get to take any of the candy. But of course that didn't work.
